Dragon Egg Shell Crochet Pattern

dragon egg shell crochet pattern

Ever since I made the dragon hatchling, I wanted to make an egg shell to go along with it. The oval shape of the dragon fits perfectly into an egg and with the name “dragon hatchling,” I thought it should definitely have a shell to hatch out of!

So here it is: how to make an egg shell for your hatchling dragon! You can find how to make the egg shell below and the free dragon pattern here.

For those who want to be able to latch up the egg, I’ve also included instructions on how to make a loop on the egg shell in case you want to add a button for the loop to latch onto. Or you can also make it like mine without the loop and button!

Here’s the Egg Shell Pattern:

As a reminder, you can find how to make the dragon for this egg shell with my free hatchling dragon pattern! Or you can follow my video tutorial on how to make the dragon here.

Downloadable PDF versions of both the egg shell and hatchling dragon pattern can also be found on my Patreon. These PDF versions also include more pictures!

Skills and Abbreviations (In U.S. terms)

MR = Magic Ring (Magic Circle)

SC = Single Crochet

INC = Increase

R = Round/Row

CH = Chain

Invisible Fasten Off

Recommended Materials:
Based on what I used to make the egg shell in the sample picture.

Super Bulky Weight Yarn (#6) in White (or the same yarn size that you used for the dragon)

6.5 mm Crochet Hook (or the same hook size that you used for the dragon)

Yarn Needle

Scissors

Stitch Markers (Optional)

Pins (Optional)

What is the invisible fasten off?

The invisible fasten off is a way to fasten off that simulates the look of a stitch and creates a smoother rim than the typical “fasten off.” For this pattern, it’s helpful to know how to make the invisible fasten off to create a smoother rim on the egg shells. I’ve attached a guide below!

How to invisible fasten off in crochet

Egg Shell:

Using White

R1 6 SC in a MR

R2 [INC] x 6 (12)

R3 [SC, INC] x 6 (18)

R4 [2 SC, INC] x 6 (24)

R5 [3 SC, INC] x 6 (30)

R6 [4 SC, INC] x 6 (36)

R7 [5 SC, INC] x 6 (42)

R8-14 42 SC (42) 7 Rounds

Invisible fasten off.

Weave in the yarn tails.

You’ve made the first half of your egg shell!

For the second half of the egg shell, you can make it in two ways:

  • Make it in the exact same way as the first egg shell

  • OR add a button and a loop so that you can latch the egg shell closed. If you’d like to make it this way, repeat the same steps from R1-13. But for R14, make 20 SC, Ch 5 (you’ll want to adjust the number of chains depending on the size of your button) , skip 1 stitch, and make 21 SC. Invisible fasten off and weave in the yarn tails.

Assembly:
Using a needle, sew roughly 6 stitches of the egg shells’ rims together. If you’d like to add a few more stitches, you can do that as well!

If you chose the option to add the button and loop, make sure to sew the egg shell opening on the opposite side of the loop. Then close up the egg shells and sew the button onto the first egg shell where the loop overlaps.

Congratulations! You finished the egg shell! If you haven’t made the dragon yet, don’t forget that you can find the free pattern here!
